Who can join as a performer?
Anyone who passes the entrance audition and can attend rehearsals and performances, including:
Amateur:
Anyone on any instrument 18 and older – you just have to have talent and be able to attend rehearsals and concerts. You’ve worked hard to develop your skills and you deserve the best opportunity to showcase your talent and love of music.
Music Educators:
Take your music skills out of the classroom and share and showcase your talent with the public!
Student:
Talented Undergraduate and Graduate students are encouraged to join, and it may even be possible for you to get credit for internships. This is a fun way to get experience, letters of recommendation, references, and network with others.
Youth:
If you are under 18 and have scored outstanding on NYSSMA level 6, have won competitions, if you are a talented member of a local youth orchestra, or participate in an area conservatory or university prep program, please do audition! We only require your parent’s permission since we often rehearse and perform at night and don’t want to hinder your academic responsibilities. A parent or guardian should accompany you to all rehearsals and performances.
Professional:
Professionals who volunteer their time and skills to the Nassau Philharmonia help us make great music. Perhaps you are bored with your current gigs, want a chance to shine in principal positions, explore more interesting and exciting repertoire, want to keep your chops up when things are slow, love to teach others and share your knowledge, experience, and expertise… and network… there are endless reasons for professionals to join the Nassau Philharmonia.
Professionals seeking principal and lead positions must be available for all rehearsals and concerts. Professionals whose schedules don’t allow regular attendance may be allowed to join the ensembles in supporting roles while committing less rehearsal time in certain circumstances.
Are their paid positions available?
Yes, on a limited basis. It is the current policy of the Nassau Philharmonia to only pay for any and all services when absolutely necessary – that is when volunteer services are either unavailable or inadequate to achieve our artistic vision. This of course includes performers.
If you are a professional musician and want to be on the list of first call musicians, you will either need to: 1) go through the regular audition process for your instrument , or else 2) submit online videos, recordings, a CV and suitable references to the Music Director. Word of mouth is great, and performing with us is fantastic, but if you want to sit in a principal chair regularly, or play a concerto or solo work with us, you must audition.
